Teaching Alexie

Here are three Essential Discussion Questions to use in literature circle and/or as writing prompts:

1. On the Spokane Indian Reservation, Alexie's main character is known as "Junior", however, when he transfers to Reardan High School people call him by his formal name Arnold. He reveals that "I felt like two different people inside one body". Was he just making reference to his name or was he making reference to a split in other ways. Please explain.

2.Alexie's main character Junior finds solace in drawing characters. He draws "because I want the world to pay attention to me". How does the depiction of a romantic love affair between an indian warrior and a white school teacher entitled Savage Summer shows his understanding of the ways racism has impacted his life as well as the lives of his family members?

3. Junior loses three people he loves to alcohol - related accidents (his grandmother, his sister, and his father's best friend Eugene) in a very short time. How do those losses affect him and shape his views on life.
